About this guide

Saunas & Cold Plunge looks at one of the oldest wellbeing habits on Earth, sitting in the heat and then plunging into cold water, which is having a moment in Scotland. Wood-fired saunas now sit on beaches from Kinghorn to Elie, and people dip in the Forth all year round.

More about this guide

The guide explains what heat and cold do to your body, then covers the history of the Finnish sauna, the Russian banya, Roman and Turkish baths, the Native American sweat lodge and Scottish sea dipping. It looks honestly at the research: the big Finnish Kuopio studies, Søberg’s winter swimmers and the latest cold-water trials, and checks the popular myths and claims.

Its short version is this: regular saunas are linked with better heart health in large Finnish studies, but those studies cannot prove cause and effect. Cold water reliably wakes you up and many people say it lifts their mood, but the research is small and early. And cold water can kill, so safety comes first.

Two safety chapters cover who should be careful, cold water shock, the 1-10-1 rule and the RNLI’s Float to Live. Then come simple how-tos for a first sauna, cold showers, cold plunges and contrast therapy, fair UK prices for kit and home saunas, checked saunas and bathing waters in Fife and nearby, and a gentle four-week plan. Never mix heat or cold water with alcohol.
