About this cookbook

Markinch Plant Kitchen is a cookbook of simple, everyday plant-based recipes, gathered and adapted for cooking at home in Fife. The recipes are not claimed as original: the book says plainly that they are inspired by alkaline and Dr Sebi-style cooking, by the London street-food business OSU Biofood, and by the books listed on its Further Reading page.

More about this cookbook

It starts with the basics you need to cook from it: an Alkaline Pantry list, where to buy the less common ingredients, and how long things keep. Then come breakfasts such as banana pancakes with date caramel and a mango key lime chia pudding; mains including stuffed peppers, an oyster mushroom “southern fried” burger, jerk oyster mushrooms with rice and peas, spelt pizza and a coconut curry with amaranth; light meals and wraps; soups and stews; drinks; and a date and banana “nice cream”.

Two basics, a cheesy squash-tahini sauce and a pico de gallo, turn up all through the book, and there are easy shopping lists at the back. Near the end, a new section adds The Mucusless 7-Day Plan: a gentle, juicy week of eating inspired by Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System, with adult and child portions, a shopping list and recipes. A short opening page explains the yogic idea of prana in food as a belief, not a health claim.
