About this guide

Since November 2018, doctors in the UK have been allowed to prescribe cannabis-based medicines. Tens of thousands of people now get them, almost all privately, yet many are still unsure what is legal, what the evidence shows and what the risks are. Medical Cannabis in the UK sets out the facts in plain English.

More about this guide

It explains what cannabis, THC and CBD are and the difference between a licensed medicine, a prescribed flower and a shop-bought CBD oil. It covers UK law today, including in Scotland, how NHS and private prescriptions actually work, typical costs, and the rules on driving, carrying it, work and travel.

The evidence chapter goes condition by condition, with a strength rating showing where the research is strong, where it is weak and where it is missing. Side effects and risks, who should be careful, questions to ask a doctor, and myths and facts follow.

There are also two history sections: the 1910 Flexner Report, which reshaped medical training and is often linked with how herbal medicines fell out of the mainstream, and the popular 2019 “Healing Web” map, which the guide describes neutrally and fact-checks. It then explains the real “healing web” inside us, the endocannabinoid system.

The guide does not recommend any treatment, product, dose or clinic. Recreational cannabis remains illegal in the UK.
